RESEARCH INTERESTS
My current research interests include monitoring, analyzing and forecasting urban sprawl. In the past I have been using day-time optical data and more recently night-lights (DMSP/OLS and VIIRS data) in this context. Recently I have developed an intercalibration method for the DMSP/OLS time series that improves the process by applying different correction coefficients per pixel, rather than a single set of correction coefficients per raster, which is the standard approach. Currently I am experimenting with forecasting methods in order to project the DMSP/OLS times series in the future (e.g. up to 2025). The forecasted rasters can be used to measure and anticipate the impact of urbanization or to predict whether countries or regions converge or diverge in terms of urbanization.
